CHAPTER TWENTY

‘I’ve got four names, maybe five, Sarge.’ Dave handed a memo sheet to Joseph. ‘All have something that makes them possible suspects — apart from the last two that is. I really cannot believe that Clive’s gamekeeper and groundsman could be involved.’

‘The criteria have changed slightly, Dave. Forget the scientific background. We are now looking for an interest in history, especially of murder or criminology.’ He stared at the names. ‘Have you talked to any of them?’

‘Not the tenants, they were all out, and I haven’t managed to get hold of the guide from the History Society yet. His phone isn’t being answered. I’ve left a message with uniform to contact me the moment either of the two guys who live at the Old Stables gets home and I’ll go back.’

They made their way back to the CID room.

‘Anyone strike you as being of particular interest, Dave?’

‘Now you’ve told me about the history connection, the man called Anthony Laker is certainly number one. He’s an academic of some kind. Clive thought he was writing papers or a book on something possibly historical. I’m looking forward very much to having a word with that one. And the other tenant, Rufus Taylor, is also an academic of some kind.’

‘I’ll come with you. Tell me the moment you hear they are back, okay?’

‘Yes, Sarge. I’d welcome your company.’

Joseph grinned. ‘Sounds like you are on first name terms with Cressy-Lawson.’

‘Don’t tell anyone, but I like him. I feel for him, Sarge. He’s a good bloke deep down, he just has the weight of the world on his shoulders.’

Joseph pictured the magnificent Cressy Old Hall and grimaced. ‘Not a bad weight to have to bear.’

‘You’d think so, but it comes at a price.’ Dave’s face darkened. ‘I thought I’d give my right arm to own a place like that, but listening to the catalogue of constant demands it sends raining down on him, I wouldn’t want to be in his shoes for a minute.’

‘The running costs must be astronomical.’ Joseph left Dave with a parting reminder to call him before he returned to the Old Hall. He was determined to look every single suspect right in the eyes until he came face to face with their killer. And then? He just hoped he would be alone with him.

‘Sorry. I was downstairs with Niall, checking on anything coming in from the streets.’

For half an hour? Nikki stared at him, suddenly aware of being shut out from his thoughts. Whatever was going on? Annoyed and unhappy, she didn’t have the time to go into it right now.

‘Did he give you an update about the security cameras at the covered market?’ she asked.

Joseph looked blank. ‘No, why?’

She filled him in on their latest information, courtesy of Gill Mason. His eyes brightened, then they seemed to set in a hard stare.

‘That’s massive! Want me to contact Niall again?’ he said.

‘He’ll ring us.’ She looked at him steadily. What are you thinking, Joseph Easter?

‘Dave has several people
